Hi-Fi 101 – Introduction To Understanding Vintage Audio

Hi-Fi or High Fidelity Audio refers to both the methods of recording used and the quality of equipment used for sound reproduction. Home stereo listeners, audiophiles and pro audio enthusiasts demand high quality reproduction of sound to provide quality imaging. Typically recordings made after the late 1940’s will be of a sufficient quality assuming they are analog. Newer compression formats can lower sound quality making things like MP3 files less suitable for listening by a connoisseur of sound.

Hi-Fi equipment typically possess traits such as inaudible or low noise and distortion levels, and a flat frequency response within a dynamic frequency range. Speakers and horns are selected for traits such as cabinets and impedance to suit both the amplifier and the rooms acoustics. Equalizers may be used to adjust specific frequencies; however there is a lot of contention in the worldwide Hi-Fi community as to whether they are needed for a variety of reasons.

In the guides below,  we will cover some basic components & brands, as well as basic concepts and troubleshooting information. Enjoy!
