Vintage Equalizer Information

It is believed that if used correctly an equalizer can augment the deficiencies a listening environment. Cloth will absorb bass frequencies for example.

When each frequency is flat or in the central position, you are hearing the sound as closely as possible to how it was recorded.

Some people like that they can control every aspect of the music in order to their liking, while others believe firmly that a EQ has no useful function on a true hifi system and that its only function is to give the fingers something to fiddle around with. It is true that knobs, sliders and dials can introduce distortion and noise into a signal path which adds to the argument that true hi-fidelity reproduction is only achieved by minimizing the path between source and listener. One can easily do damage to the work done by a recordings producers & engineers.

While using an equalizer is frowned upon by some of the hi-fi community it should not discourage a listener from experimentation to see if one would benefit their listening style or listening room environmental needs. Home listening rooms suffer from peaks and troughs in frequency response that is caused by architecture and materials dampening or amplifying sound, which to some degree can be controlled and sometimes eliminated using an EQ. Every system can reproduce the frequency spectrum in a slightly different way. This uneven response can be corrected by careful and selective use of a spectrum analyzer and a graphic EQ. Once set up correctly to the acoustics of the listening environment they should be left alone.
